[Abstract]
The purposes of this paper are: to introduce the important role of family business to Korean academe and exe cutives; to describe the prominent characteristics of a sample of Korean immigrant family businesses and their owners/managers; and to identify key success factors of Korean immigrant family businesses. Survey and interview data were collected from Korean immigrant businesses in metro-Atlanta. Most businesses didn't have a board of directors. Only a small number of respondents had formal written succession plans and fewer held regular family meetings. The Korean immigrant family businesses were located in Korea-town, complex areas, and white areas. Target customers were white, Korean, and African-American. The main competitors are Korean and White.
Korean immigrant businesses are owned and/or managed primarily by family members. A Family business is a business that includes two or more members of a family than owns and controls the company. Strong family ties were significant contributors to the success of these businesses. The key success factors of this sample were sincerity, diligence, effort, and honesty. Net income was greater when they had a target customer in a good area and a goal. Unpaid family labor was invaluable human capital while the spouse was the most important source of family labor. Strategic and succession planning also correlated to net income.
More studies are needed to gain a better perspective on the scope of this research, including identifying other variables for examination.

  • - Lee Jin Joo (Korea Advanced Institute of Science Technology)
  • - Kim Ju Seong (Electronics Telecommunications Research Institute)
  • - Chun Hyun Kon (Korea Advanced Institute of Science Technology)
[Abstract]
This study investigated the current status and characteristics of University Business Incubators(UTBIs) in Information and Telecommunication Industry. From the questionnaire survey, some obstacles of managing UTBI were revealed. To loosen them, we suggested a kind of UTBIs' managing model in the industry. The industry's and university's characteristics were took into account in developing the model. In addition, this model reflected some other characteristics; i.e. the setting up purpose, the original promoter, and so forth.
We suggested six constituencies at the model. Among of the constituencies, the government have to play a major role for the managing effectiveness of UTBIs. To drive the UTBIs' financial independence plan, the roles of each constituency were proposed from the model. It was also proposed that government had to establish the infrastructure of UTBIs and to play a significant role to improve the effectiveness of UTBIs.
The Impact of National Information Infrastructure on SME's Job Turnover in U . S . and Its Implication to Korea's SME's Job Creation Policy
  • - Lee Youn Jai (Soongsil University)
[Abstract]
This paper shows an empirical estimation of the national information infrastructure's impact on the employment of small and medium enterprises in U.S.A.
The main findings are as follows. First, the performance of employment of SMEs depends on the degree of the national information infrastructure by region. The national information capital stock has contradictory influence on labor market; information technology has been working on reducing labor demand by substitution effect, but it also can create new labor demand in other way by creating new niche markets. Technical substitution between information infrastructure and labor was promoted in the higher information investment region, while not shown in the lower information investment region. In addition, job creation effect dominated over the job destruction in the higher information infrastructure region. Second, 'the product innovation effect' dominated over 'the process innovation effect' in the higher information regions but the reverse held in the lower information region. Third, there was strong relations between new start-ups and the regional information infrastructure, which provides us an important implication for promoting employment in the information technology era.

Strategy on the Cyber Trade Corporation for Small and Medium Enterprises
  • - Choi Yong Rok (University of Incheon)
[Abstract]
Under the borderless competition of the WTO, Internet, the unified world of cyberspace, is going to change the way we conduct all our business. Due to the rapid growth of the needs for the Internet Business, Internet is no more an option for the international trade. Rather, it became the necessary media of the export marketing.
The purpose of this study is to compare the role of export marketing with and without internet, and find the best strategies for the cyber trade by means of a cyber trading company.
For the efficient role of a cyber trading company, it is required for the change of role from the simple trade advertisement into the real meaning of the trade organizer, arranger and monitor for overall process of the export marketing.
Especially, for the small and medium enterprises, a cyber trading company should provide more specialized, integrated, and reliable measures for promoting the small amount of the exports. In order to provide these services, a cyber trading company should integrate its role with other trade related partners by means of outsourcing and/or strategic alliances.
A Costing Method for Pricing Evaluation Fee of Software Security System
  • - Chung Hong Jin (Hannam University)
  • - Lee Kang Soo (Hannam University)
  • - Ahn Sun Sook (Hannam University)
[Abstract]
There is no cost accounting standards for Evaluation of Software Security System in Korea. Therefore the evaluators use "Security Evaluation Criteria for Firewall Systems and guidelines' established by Korea Information Security Agency for determining the evaluation fee. But the standards and guidelines have several problems. One of the major problems is that it does not show the base for calculating the evaluation fee. Thus we need the costing method for the fee determination to agree between the evaluator(seller) and client(buyer). The purpose of this article is to show a costing method for determining evaluation fee.
The results of this study are as follow :
1. Job order costing method should be used for the fee determination, because the fee is notified by grades and evaluated by products.
2. Standard costing system should be used to calculate the evaluation costs, because the fee is paid in advance.
3. We divided the evaluating costs to 3 major categories; direct labor charge-evaluator's labor, tool usage costs, other expense (including indirect labor charge and tool maintenance costs, overhead costs).
As a starting point, we recommend the cost plus pricing system for determining evaluation fee, which is calculated by adding a pre-determined target profit to the evaluation costs.
Further research in this area should enlarge the scope of study, not only the firewall system evaluation but also the overall information security systems evaluation.
Finally, we hope that this study will help stimulate the application of costing theory to determining evaluation fee of software security system.
