The Impact of Strategic Fit and Cooperative Relationships on the Performance of SMEs : An Empirical Study of Samsung Electronics¡¯ Suppliers
  • - Jangwoo Lee (School of Business)
  • - Minjae Kim (Kyungpook National University)
[Abstract]
This research attempts to analyze the impact of cooperative relationship
with large prime enterprises on the competitiveness of small and medium-sized
companies by focusing on strategic fit. For this, hypotheses were suggested and tested
for 90 top-tier suppliers of Samsung Electronics. According to the empirical analysis,
it was revealed that the intensity of cooperation including technology, manpower,
finance and sales, which reflects a behavioral aspect of cooperation, has a different
impact on the competitiveness depending on competitive strategies. Particularly,
cooperation in technology and manpower had positive relations with all competitive
strategies, which implicates that cooperation in technology and manpower is more
important for small supplier companies to implement competitive strategies effectively.
The quality of cooperation including future orientation and win-win relationships,
which reflects an attitudinal aspect of cooperation displayed a positive relationship
with all competitive strategies. Therefore, when it comes to the cooperation between
a large prime enterprise and small suppliers of it, it is important to consider both
behavioral and attitudinal aspects. Moreover, both environment-strategies fit and
strategies-cooperation fit appeared higher in the high performance group than that
in the low performance one.
This result shows that fit not only between environment and strategies but also
between strategies and cooperation has a positive influence on the performance of
small supplier companies. Accordingly, this study argues that in addition to employing
competitive strategies suitable to the environment, cooperation with a large prime
enterprise has a significant effect on the competitiveness of small and medium-sized
companies.
Regional Difference of Financial Constraint and its Effects on Entrepreneurship in Korea
  • - Donghun Joo (Hanyang University)
  • - Jong Chil Son (The Bank of Korea)
[Abstract]
This study assesses the level of financial constraint on 16 regions in
Korea using a general equilibrium model which can be used to analyze the relationship
between occupational choice and financial constraint. The analysis shows that there
exists quite a difference in the level of financial constraint among the regions. This
study also analyzes the determinant factors for entrepreneurship by separating
entrepreneurs as the employer and the self-employed using panel regression model
which includes financial constraint level as one of the explanatory variables. It turns
out that the strength of financial constraint is negatively related with the ratio of
the employer to all occupation and is positively related with that of the self-employed.
These results are consistent with the explanation of a general equilibrium model
about those relations. This implies that easing the financial constraint can improve
the structure of entrepreneurship by increasing the employer and decreasing the
involuntary self-employed.

entire sample perceive the high regulatory compliance pressures and all respondents
of SMEs were nearly not used the best practices such as environmental management
system (EMS), pollution control technology, and pollution prevention (P2) as a program
of plant-level improvement. Using the survey data from 323 Korean manufacturing

on the relationship of legitimized environmental management system and P2, controlling
industries, firm size, and ISO 14001 certified. The survey results show that
the pollution control technology completely mediate the relationship of legitimized
environmental management system and P2.

The Effects of New Store Movement (University Student Field Study) on University Students¡¯ Entrepreneurial Intentions and Small Enterprise Owners¡¯ Management Performances
  • - You Tay LEE (Pukyong National University)
[Abstract]
New Store Movement (NSM) is a university student field study that
has been implemented in Busan since 2012. This research has been conducted in
order to demonstrate the effects of NSM on the participating students¡¯ entrepreneurial
intentions and small enterprise owners¡¯ management performance.
Main findings of this research are as follows. First, NSM has shown to have positive
influence on university students¡¯ entrepreneurial intention through parameters such
as entrepreneurial skills and entrepreneurship. Secondly, the relationship between
NSM and management performance also have been shown positive. Participating
in NSM with students has also increased business owners¡¯ entrepreneurial skills
(management skills) and entrepreneurship. In particular, strengthened entrepreneurial
skills through NSM have shown to contribute largely to financial and non-financial
success of their businesses.
Small enterprises are critical components of South Korea¡¯s economy, and contribute
largely to country¡¯s basic economic growth. Therefore, the findings of this New
Store Movement study have positive implications to society as the movement proves
to help the owners of these small enterprises strengthen their business skills, explore
their entrepreneurship, and improve their management performance. Furthermore, New
Store Movement provides a high quality field experience through which university students can build and strengthen practical business skills while establishing mutually
beneficial economic relations with the aforementioned small enterprise owners. New
Store Movement can provide a virtuous cycle in which the entrepreneurial intentions
translate to real ventures that can support the economic growth and create employment
opportunities. Ultimately, the movement is meant to not only provide a sound solution
to the on-going unemployment crisis but also contribute to continuous and stable
economic growth.
A Study on External Factors and Appropriate Activities for SMEs¡¯ Environmental Management
  • - Ju Hwan Oh (Chungbuk National University)
  • - Jidae Kim (Chungbuk National University)
[Abstract]
This study proposes and attempts to test a model on the relationship
among external factors, CEO's willingness for the environmental management,
environmental management activities, environmental performance, and firm performance
of small-and-medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMEs). In addition,
this study examines the moderating effect of corporate capability on the relationship.
The results of empirical analysis for 162 SMEs suggests that both competitive
challenges and stakeholders' pressure are statistically signigicant external factors
enforcing SMEs' CEOs to adopt environmental management. It is also revealed that
there is an appropriate order of implementing environmental management activities
for SMEs, like this : spreading environmental awareness ¡æ reorganizing internal systems
¡æ utilizing external networks. Notably, it is found that environmental performance
of SMEs is closely linked to their corporate performance. Finally, the research result
shows that corporate capability has a moderating effect on the relationship among
environmental variables in SMEs. SMEs with higher capability try to adopt environment
management for the purpose of sustaining long-term relations with their stakeholders
and implement both spreading environmental awareness and reorganizing internal
systems, more than in the case of SMEs with lower capability. On the contrary,
SMEs with lower capability tend to adopt environment for the purpose of responding
competitive challenges and implement utilizing external networks for acquiring needed
knowledge and technology, more than in the case of SMCs with higher capability.
